‘A challenged world is an alert world and from challenge comes change. So let’s all choose to challenge.’
This is the theme for this year’s global day for celebrating the many achievements of women. The 8th March has been celebrated by the United Nations as IWD since 1975. However, the seeds of this were planted in 1908 when 15 000 women marched through New York City demanding better working conditions including pay and hours. The path to equality has been a long one, since women activists protesting for the right to vote in the early 1900s, through to the feminist movement in the 1970s protesting for inclusion and influence, to ongoing gender pay gap disputes.
Over a century on and we are still asking ourselves what can we do so that our daughters will not have to face and endure the same challenges as our predecessors. Whatever you decide to do to mark this day remember, it is not just one day. It is today and beyond. #ChooseToChallenge
